The association of pigmentation with an enlarging pituitary tumour following bilateral adrenalectomy in a patient with Cushing's disease is known as Nelson's syndrome (Fig. 8.11). It is estimated that approximately thirty per cent of patients who undergo bilateral adrenalectomy without prophylactic pituitary radiotherapy will develop this condition.
